As a young country, New Zealand has always been dependant on overseas capital to finance the development of its economy. This is still the case today.
Located in the bottom of the Pacific Rim, New Zealand is well located to take advantage of exporting to the strong-growing Asian economies. The Government is in the final stages of negotiating a free-trade agreement with China and other Asian economies, modeled on the successful free-trade agreement it has with Singapore. The New Zealand economy is one of the most deregulated in the OECD, and rated the easiest country in the world to conduct business. Costs have been contained through sound fiscal policies, allowing New Zealand manufactures have a competitive advantage over its nearest neighbour, Australia. Like most economies, New Zealand also has some risks. The level of consumer debt has increased rapidly, and their has been a deterioration in the current account, which has forced the reserve bank to increase interest rates to reduce the rate of growth and correct some distortions in the domestic economy. New Zealand has the lowest level of unemployment in the OECD (just over 3%), which has created a tight labour market.
