Car
Obviously the easiest way to get around NZ is by car. You can drive for one year on an international or current overseas license, however you must convert it to a NZ one before the one year has passed.
To apply for a New Zealand license you can contact any of Land Transport New Zealand driver licensing agents. These are normally your local AA centre. To get a New Zealand license you will have to pass a theory test and, depending on the country you have come from, you may have to pass a practical driving test as well. And don’t forget we drive on the left!
Bringing in cars from Europe is a hassle and simply not worth the effort. Even for limited stays it might be interesting to buy a second hand car here, especially when you have a look at the lower prices for cars - compared with Europe.
Taxi
Every region in NZ has a taxi service which normally can offer services such as taxis, limousines, shuttles, airport transfers and wheelchair access taxis. The average price for a taxi and van is:
Flagfall $2.00 Car Tariff per km $2.20 Van Tariff per km $2.40
Here you can find a list of taxi companies throughout the country.
Bus, Train, Ferry
Buses run through all main cities and intercity. These services are run by private providers and so fares and timetables will vary from provider to provider. Within cities you can buy tickets from the driver, or monthly passes are also available at bus depos or some dairies.
Buses are the main form of public transport around the cities. Trains and ferries do not run as frequently as they only have certain routes. However trains are a preferred mode of transport for travelling intercity and the ferry is used to cross Cook Strait between the two islands.

Airplane
